Comparing Semaglutide and Empagliflozin in People with Uncontrolled Type 2 Diabetes Over 18 Months

Abstract

After 18 months, 100% of patients treated with empagliflozin improved their HbA1c levels.

  • Median HbA1c decreased from 7.60% to 6.85% in the empagliflozin group and from 7.90% to 7.00% in the semaglutide group.
  • A reduction in body weight of 5% or more occurred in 10.0% of empagliflozin patients compared to 28.6% of those on semaglutide.
  • Albuminuria improved in 90.0% of empagliflozin users versus 66.7% of semaglutide users.
  • Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) increased in both groups, with a final median of 80.50 mL/min/1.73 m² for empagliflozin and 71.00 mL/min/1.73 m² for semaglutide.
  • 75.0% of empagliflozin patients and 71.4% of semaglutide patients experienced a decrease in serum creatinine.
