Abstract
Among 17,604 patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and obesity, randomization to semaglutide significantly reduced major adverse cardiovascular events compared with placebo.
- The primary outcome measured was major adverse cardiovascular events, including cardiovascular death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, and nonfatal stroke.
- Inflammation, indicated by plasma levels of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), may serve as a biomarker for cardiovascular risk in individuals with obesity and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.
- The SELECT trial offers an opportunity to explore the connections between hsCRP levels, obesity, weight loss, and cardiovascular outcomes in patients treated with semaglutide versus those receiving placebo.
