Abstract

Senescent cells secrete senescence associated extracellular vesicles (SA-EVs) that may impair skin regeneration and contribute to chronic skin disorders.

  • SA-EVs are characterized by increased secretion rates, altered production processes, and selective cargo containing proinflammatory molecules.
  • The contents of SA-EVs include microRNAs, cytokines, mitochondrial DNA, and various noncoding RNAs.
  • SA-EVs can promote cellular senescence in neighboring cells, negatively affecting wound healing.
  • These vesicles are associated with the development of chronic wounds, diabetic ulcers, burns, pathological scarring, and skin aging.
  • Therapeutic approaches targeting SA-EVs include senolytic and senomorphic strategies, as well as regenerative mesenchymal stem cell-derived vesicles.
