How Body Movement Expectations Influence Brain Response When Watching Object Lifting: The Role of a Social Perception Brain Area

Updated

Abstract

Corticospinal excitability is influenced by object weight expectations during observation of object lifting in 35 humans.

  • Motor resonance, the activation of the observer's motor system during action observation, is affected by the observer's weight expectations.
  • This suppression of motor resonance occurs when expected object weight does not match the actual weight indicated by movement cues.
  • Virtual lesions in the posterior superior temporal sulcus (pSTS) eliminated the suppressive effect, restoring weight-driven motor resonance.
  • Dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) virtual lesions also affected motor resonance, suggesting both pSTS and DLPFC play significant roles.
  • The findings indicate that motor resonance is influenced by both bottom-up sensory information and top-down cognitive processes.
