Sepsis risk in people with COPD and type 2 diabetes linked to new blood sugar treatments

Updated

Abstract

Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) may experience differing infection-related outcomes based on the type of antihyperglycemic agent used.

  • GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) and sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2is) are both antihyperglycemic agents used in T2DM management.
  • Patients with COPD and T2DM are at an increased risk of sepsis.
  • The comparative infection-related outcomes of GLP-1RAs and SGLT2is in this population are not yet fully understood.
