Blood Metabolite Patterns Linked to Chronic Kidney Disease and Potential Biomarkers

Abstract

A total of 1,426 metabolites were detected in serum samples from 35 chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients and 30 healthy controls.

  • Out of the detected metabolites, 397 showed significant alterations between CKD patients and healthy individuals, with 216 being up-regulated and 181 down-regulated.
  • Differential metabolites were primarily involved in phenylalanine metabolism, arginine and proline metabolism, and glutathione metabolism, indicating systemic metabolic dysfunction in CKD.
  • Serum concentrations of adrenaline and nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) were significantly altered in CKD patients compared to healthy controls.
  • No significant linear correlation was found between the levels of adrenaline and NMN and CKD progression.
  • Dysregulated metabolic pathways, including amino acid metabolism and redox-related pathways, are associated with renal function impairment and oxidative stress in CKD.
