Link Between Blood Zinc Levels and Fatty Liver Disease and Severe Liver Scarring

Abstract

Among 3,398 US adults, higher serum zinc concentrations are associated with an increased likelihood of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

  • A positive linear relationship exists between serum zinc levels and the probability of developing NAFLD.
  • Odds ratios for NAFLD increase with higher serum zinc quartiles, with the highest quartile showing an odds ratio of 2.00 (1.40, 2.86).
  • An inverse correlation is observed between serum zinc concentrations and the incidence of advanced liver fibrosis in individuals with NAFLD.
  • Odds ratios for advanced fibrosis decrease with higher serum zinc quartiles, with the highest quartile showing an odds ratio of 0.41 (0.21, 0.77).
  • No evident nonlinear relationship between serum zinc concentration and either NAFLD or advanced fibrosis was found.
