Common genetic links and causes between obstructive sleep apnea and heart diseases using genome-wide and genetic analysis

Updated

Abstract

Strong genetic correlations were found between obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and five cardiovascular diseases (CVDs): coronary artery disease, heart failure, myocardial infarction, stroke, and atrial fibrillation.

  • Novel genetic variants linked to cardiovascular diseases were identified.
  • Fifteen shared genetic locations between OSA and coronary artery disease were discovered.
  • Twenty-five shared locations were found between OSA and myocardial infarction.
  • Seven shared locations were identified between OSA and heart failure.
  • Mendelian randomization analysis indicated a significant causal effect of OSA on heart failure and atrial fibrillation.
  • Atrial fibrillation was suggested to be a causal factor for OSA, while heart failure showed partial causality.
