Shen-Bai-Jie-Du decoction may slow colorectal cancer by reducing cancer stem cell aggressiveness through gut bacteria, bile acids, and FXR signaling

Abstract

Shen-Bai-Jie-Du decoction (SBJDD) may inhibit colorectal tumorigenesis by protecting the intestinal mucosal barrier.

  • SBJDD is associated with a reduction in the fecal abundance of bile acid-producing gut microbiota.
  • The bile acid receptor FXR and its downstream target genes were significantly upregulated after SBJDD administration.
  • Bioactive components of SBJDD are shown to bind to FXR, suggesting a mechanistic interaction.
  • SBJDD appears to downregulate cancer stem cell marker genes through modulation of FXR signaling pathways.
  • These findings support that SBJDD may alleviate colorectal cancer stem cell malignancy by affecting the gut microbiota-bile acid-FXR axis.
