Abstract

Shift workers had greater absolute numbers of total white blood cells compared to day shift workers.

  • Long-term night shift workers showed higher counts of total white blood cells, neutrophils, lymphocytes, and monocytes.
  • Short-term night shift workers (7 days) also exhibited elevated white blood cell counts compared to day shift workers.
  • Similar trends were observed for short-term shifts of 3, 5, and 14 days.
  • These elevated white blood cell counts may be linked to immune system disruptions associated with shift work.
  • The findings suggest a potential risk for chronic diseases among shift workers due to immune system dysregulation.
