Abstract

In a sample of 33,983 adults, 27% were shift workers and 26% were physically inactive.

  • Physical inactivity may be exacerbated by shift work, particularly among women.
  • Inactivity levels among shift workers were 23% higher in women than in men.
  • Evening or night shifts were linked to increased leisure-time physical inactivity in women.
  • Leisure-time physical inactivity was 17% higher in women working night shifts and 24% higher in those on evening shifts compared to daytime workers.
