Skin bacteria influence daily cell death cycles to protect the skin barrier in psoriasis

Updated

Abstract

Microbial dysbiosis in psoriatic lesions is associated with a reduction in Lactobacillus.

  • Topical administration of Lactobacillus plantarum may alleviate psoriatic lesions.
  • L. plantarum produces indole-3-lactic acid, which is linked to restoring circadian rhythms in skin cells.
  • Restoration of circadian rhythmicity in keratinocytes could suppress ferroptosis, a form of cell death.
  • Promoting epidermal barrier repair is suggested as a potential outcome of L. plantarum treatment.
