How Sleep and Hair Loss Are Related: A Systematic Review

Abstract

Sleep disturbance was consistently elevated across hair loss disorders, particularly in alopecia areata (n = 14).

  • Hair loss conditions such as alopecia areata, androgenetic alopecia, telogen effluvium, and lichen planopilaris show a significant association with sleep disturbances.
  • Mechanisms linking sleep issues to hair loss differ by subtype and include cytokine activation and hormonal imbalance.
  • Psychosocial distress is commonly observed to exacerbate sleep disruption in various hair loss disorders.
  • The overall quality of evidence regarding the relationship between sleep disturbances and hair loss is low to moderate, with a predominance of cross-sectional studies.
