Sleep timing, not just sleep length, is linked to body weight in Brazilian adults

Updated

Abstract

BMI decreased by 0.40 kg/m² for each additional hour of sleep duration.

  • Short sleep duration, defined as less than 7 hours per night, is associated with higher BMI.
  • Each additional hour of bedtime is linked to an increase in BMI by 0.37 kg/m².
  • The relationship between bedtime and BMI persists even when accounting for sleep duration.
  • Associations between sleep patterns and BMI appear to be stronger at higher BMI levels.
  • Wake-up time does not show statistically significant associations with BMI.
