How SMURF2 may control lung cell changes linked to silicosis through the TGF-beta/Smad signaling pathway

Updated

Abstract

Targeted knockout of SMURF2 in alveolar type II cells may inhibit epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in silicosis.

  • Inhibition of SMURF2 led to increased levels of E-cadherin and Smad7 in cells exposed to silicon dioxide.
  • Increased expressions of N-cadherin, alpha-smooth muscle actin, and TGF-β signaling proteins were observed in silicon dioxide-treated cells with intact SMURF2.
  • Silica nodules and collagen deposition were noted in silicosis mice with normal SMURF2 expression.
  • The area of silica nodules and collagen deposition decreased in silicosis mice with targeted SMURF2 knockout.
  • Targeted deletion of SMURF2 is associated with modulation of the TGF-β/Smad signaling pathway.
