Abstract
Medium chain fatty acids, such as sodium caprate, have been studied to enhance the oral delivery of proteins and peptides.
- Oral delivery of proteins and peptides faces significant challenges regarding bioavailability and patient compliance.
- Surfactants, fatty acids, bile salts, pH modifiers, and chelating agents have been investigated to improve intestinal absorption.
- Sodium N-[8-(2-hydroxybenzoyl) amino] caprylate (SNAC) and its derivatives may assist in overcoming these delivery obstacles.
- The review discusses the chemistry and potential toxicity of SNAC, along with mechanisms for enhancing oral delivery.
- Clinically proven molecules, like simaglutide, and others under development may benefit from these enhanced delivery methods.
