Abstract

Diabetes-related kidney disease (DKD) is a major complication of type 1 diabetes (T1D) and remains a leading cause of kidney failure.

  • DKD is associated with hyperglycemia-driven stress on the kidneys.
  • Maladaptive kidney blood flow and filtration processes may contribute to DKD progression.
  • Inflammation and scarring in the kidneys could be intensified by specific signaling pathways.
  • Emerging clinical evidence supports the potential benefits of kidney-protective therapies for T1D patients.
