Sodium nitrite slows down fatigue in single mouse muscle fibers under normal oxygen levels

Updated

Abstract

Dietary nitrate supplementation decreased time to fatigue by 34% at high oxygen levels and increased it by 21% at low oxygen levels.

  • Nitrite treatment improved calcium handling in single mouse muscle fibers at near-physiological oxygen levels.
  • At low oxygen tension, nitrite exposure led to greater calcium pumping rate from the sarcoplasmic reticulum.
  • During repeated contractions with nitrite, calcium accumulation between contractions was reduced compared to control.
  • Nitrite treatment did not alter peak calcium concentration during fatiguing contractions at near-physiological oxygen levels.
