Somatostatin Neurons in the Body Clock Area Linked to Anxiety and Depression Together After Sleep Loss

Updated

Abstract

SCN neurons are essential for cSD-induced anxiety- and depression-like behaviors.

  • Chronic sleep deprivation (cSD) significantly alters emotional behaviors, as indicated by increased anxiety- and depression-like responses.
  • In vivo calcium imaging reveals that the activity of SCN neurons in response to anxiety-inducing stimuli is significantly reduced after cSD.
  • Chemogenetic suppression of SCN neurons enhances anxiety- and depression-like behaviors under normal conditions.
  • Both chemogenetic and optogenetic activation of SCN neurons can reverse emotional disturbances caused by cSD.
  • Specific SCN efferent pathways play distinct roles in managing mood changes due to cSD, with some projections mitigating these effects more effectively than others.
