Extra Ssd1 and calorie restriction extend yeast lifespan by reducing harmful age-related iron intake

Updated

Abstract

Essence

Ssd1 overexpression and calorie restriction extended yeast replicative lifespan by limiting age-dependent iron uptake.

Evidence

This yeast single-cell microfluidics and genetic-mechanistic study tracked lifespan, Ssd1 condensates, iron-regulon activity, intracellular iron, and interactions with calorie restriction, iron supplementation, chelation, and iron-regulon inactivation.

Caveat

The work is in aging yeast cells, so its proposed relevance to human lifespan or healthspan is mechanistic and indirect.
