Nerve Block Treatment for COVID-19-Related Distorted Sense of Smell: A Randomized Trial

Abstract

A three-month response rate of 43% was observed in participants receiving stellate ganglion block (SGB) compared to 38% in those receiving placebo.

  • No significant difference was found between SGB and placebo in improving parosmia symptoms, with a difference of -5% in response rates.
  • The study included 48 participants, with 32 receiving SGB and 16 receiving placebo, all with a median age of 45 years.
  • Participants had a similar time since COVID-19 infection, averaging 35.3 months for SGB and 30.6 months for placebo.
  • There was no observed difference in global improvement between the SGB and placebo groups.
