Abstract

A postbiotic extract, LFEAN031, demonstrated efficacy in alleviating carbonyl stress in a mouse model.

  • Carbonyl stress is linked to the accumulation of reactive dicarbonyl species like methylglyoxal (MGO), which disrupts mitochondrial function and contributes to various disorders.
  • Screening of 177 metabolite extracts from 113 bacterial strains revealed significant differences in MGO-AGEs breaking activity at the strain level.
  • The selected postbiotic extract LFEAN031 contained compounds such as tryptophan and specific peptides that break down MGO-AGEs.
  • Oral administration of LFEAN031 restored colon length and increased expression of the tight junction protein ZO-1 in MGO-induced mice.
  • Treatment with LFEAN031 reduced serum levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and cortisol, indicating a decrease in inflammation and stress response.
  • Improvements in depressive and anxiety-like behaviors were observed alongside changes in gut metabolite pathways related to GGPs and tryptophan metabolism.
