Streptococcus thermophilus changes fat metabolism to extend healthy life in Caenorhabditis elegans through a fat-regulating pathway

Updated

Abstract

Supplementation with Streptococcus thermophilus significantly extended the healthspan of Caenorhabditis elegans.

  • Health indicators such as motility improved and age pigment accumulation was reduced in treated worms.
  • The fatty acid profile was remodeled, with a marked increase in monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs).
  • The nuclear hormone receptor NHR-49, similar to mammalian PPARα, was upregulated, activating delta-9 desaturase genes.
  • Increased expression of fat-5, fat-6, and fat-7 genes contributed to higher levels of MUFAs.
  • Exogenous oleic acid and palmitoleic acid reversed lifespan reductions in specific mutant strains.
  • Findings suggest that modulation of lipid metabolism via Streptococcus thermophilus could promote healthspan.
