Stress and metabolic ageing in older adults during long crises, shown by Ukraine

Updated

Abstract

Prolonged crises may increase the risk of metabolic deterioration and functional decline in older adults.

  • Chronic psychological and social stress, along with irregular nutrition and reduced physical activity, can compound age-related vulnerabilities.
  • Maladaptive stress responses under prolonged crisis conditions may be linked to abdominal obesity and sarcopenic obesity.
  • Physiological dysregulation during crises can contribute to physical frailty and functional decline.
  • Chronic activation of the stress response system is associated with various detrimental health outcomes, including inflammation and insulin resistance.
  • A comprehensive framework for healthy ageing should integrate mental health assessment, metabolic screening, and muscle function evaluation.
