Abstract

Interpersonal problems were associated with elder mistreatment through loneliness in a study of 897 older adults.

  • Loneliness partially mediated the relationship between interpersonal relationship strain and elder mistreatment.
  • Social support acted as a buffer against the negative effects of interpersonal strain on mistreatment.
  • Both direct and indirect effects of interpersonal problems on mistreatment were observed.
