Structure and treatment potential of 5-methoxytryptamines

Abstract

Five cryogenic electron microscopy structures of the serotonin receptor 5-HT were analyzed.

  • 5-MeO-DMT, a psychedelic from Colorado River toads, interacts with the serotonin receptor 5-HT.
  • Characterization of 5-methoxytryptamines at both 5-HT and 5-HT reveals molecular factors influencing serotonin signaling.
  • A 5-HT-selective analogue of 5-MeO-DMT did not produce hallucinogenic effects but showed anxiolytic-like and antidepressant-like activity in mice.
  • These findings provide insights into how psychedelics affect serotonin receptors and may guide the development of new neuropsychiatric medications.
