Feelings of loneliness in older adults living in social housing in Ontario

Abstract

20.0% of older adults in social housing were found to be socially isolated.

  • The rate of social isolation among participants aged 65 and older was 36.1%, nearly double that of the general population's 19.6%.
  • Increased age is associated with higher social isolation, with those aged 65-84 years having nearly double the odds compared to those aged 55-64 years.
  • Alcohol consumption is linked to a higher risk of social isolation, with an odds ratio of 2.45.
  • Symptoms of anxiety or depression are significantly associated with social isolation, showing an odds ratio of 6.05.
  • Income insecurity is related to increased social isolation risk, with an odds ratio of 2.10.
  • Protective factors against social isolation include having at least one chronic cardiometabolic disease, being physically active, and reporting good to excellent general health.
