Patterns of substance use and mental health symptoms in students and schools

Abstract

Among 11,994 students, 57.6% were classified in a low substance use and mental health profile.

  • Five distinct profiles of co-occurring substance use and mental health symptoms were identified among adolescents.
  • 22.5% of students exhibited high mental health but low substance use.
  • 9.7% were categorized in a heavy drinking and cannabis use profile.
  • 3.7% fell into a heavy drinking and smoking profile.
  • Positive school climate, belonging, and safety were associated with higher odds of students being in the low substance use and mental health profile.
  • 28% of schools had low, 57% had moderate, and 15% had high levels of student substance use and comorbid mental health symptoms.
