Sulforaphane reduces colitis and gut-brain problems possibly through interactions between gut microbes, metabolism, and oxygen regulation

Updated

Abstract

Sulforaphane (SFN) significantly alleviated colitis symptoms and improved anxiety- and depression-like behaviors in a mouse model.

  • SFN enhanced hippocampal structure and function in the context of colitis.
  • The treatment improved intestinal barrier integrity by increasing goblet cell abundance and upregulating MUC2 expression.
  • SFN normalized the expression of tight junction proteins, including Occludin, Claudin-1, Claudin-5, and ZO-1.
  • SFN attenuated both peripheral and central inflammation responses and promoted anti-inflammatory macrophage polarization.
  • The treatment partially restored gut microbiota composition and increased short-chain fatty acid production.
  • Increased expression of HIF-1α and glycolytic activation were observed in DSS-induced colitis, while SFN inhibited HIF-1α signaling.
