Combined Hydrogel and Microalgae Treatment Targeting Gut and Brain Immune Problems in Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Updated
Abstract
A colon-targeted hydrogel carrying paeoniflorin and Chlorella vulgaris improved both colitis and anxiety-, depressive-, and cognitive-like abnormalities in a mouse model of chronic colitis.
This preclinical biomaterials study developed a pH-responsive hydrogel-microalgae platform and in chronic colitis mice showed better colon delivery and stronger effects than free paeoniflorin on gut barrier integrity, systemic and hippocampal inflammation, and behavior, alongside evidence for complement C3 and microglia/A1 astrocyte involvement.
These findings come from a murine chronic colitis model and mechanistic experiments, so they do not establish clinical benefit or safety in people with IBD and psychiatric comorbidity.
