MSCs can serve as a suitable cell source for synovial tissue engineering, reflecting the characteristics of trauma-derived FLSs.

  • Healthy knee-derived fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLSs) from patients with ligament injuries display similar characteristics to mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs).
  • CTGF-mediated differentiation of MSCs increases HAS2 expression, which is important for the production of hyaluronan.
  • Cytokine stimulation of MSCs in a synovial tissue model leads to increased pro-inflammatory and pro-angiogenic gene expression.
  • MSC-derived fibroblasts exhibit protein expression patterns similar to those found in osteoarthritis-derived FLSs.
  • The metabolic shift towards increased fatty acid oxidation is observed in differentiated MSCs.
