Links between overall aging, frailty, and changes in the retina using combined environmental and metabolic data

Updated

Abstract

Analysis of 45,542 participants reveals significant inverse associations between biological age acceleration and macular thickness.

  • Biological age acceleration and frailty were linked to reduced macular thickness across all inner subfields.
  • Plasma metabolic signatures explained a large portion of the association, with 81.14% for PhenoAge acceleration and 19.92% for KDM-BA acceleration.
  • Adverse environmental factors, such as tobacco exposure and poor diet, correlated with decreased macular thickness.
  • Systemic aging and metabolic dysregulation were identified as important mediators in the relationships between exposomes and retinal structure.
  • These findings suggest a connection between systemic aging processes and the integrity of retinal structures.
