Tannic acid may protect skin from UVB aging by controlling cell death through antioxidant signaling

Abstract

Tannic acid (TA) significantly mitigated UVB-induced photoaging effects in human skin fibroblast cells and in a mouse model.

  • TA reduced oxidative stress damage in UVB-irradiated human skin fibroblast cells.
  • Inhibition of ferroptosis was observed, linked to modulation of MAPK signaling.
  • TA activated the NRF2/SLC7A11/GPX4 signaling pathway, which is associated with reduced photoaging.
  • In a mouse model, TA improved epidermal thickness and collagen fiber density affected by UVB exposure.
