Finding compounds that target bitter taste receptors to slow metabolic decline using a new lab method measuring hormone and inflammation signals

Updated

Abstract

Four bitter taste receptors (TAS2Rs) were identified as functionally relevant targets in the gut of Wistar rats.

  • Obesity and ageing may disrupt intestinal homeostasis by affecting bitter taste receptors.
  • TAS2Rs regulate gut hormone secretion and inflammatory responses in the intestine.
  • Differential modulation of TAS2R subtypes was observed in relation to obesity and ageing.
  • Agonists for specific TAS2Rs demonstrated dose-dependent effects on gut hormones GLP-1, GIP, and CCK.
  • In inflamed tissue, bitter agonists showed varied immunomodulatory effects on inflammatory markers TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-18.
  • The findings provide a framework for developing receptor-selective agonists to potentially modulate gut health.
