Taurine reduces liver support cell activity by blocking cell recycling and triggering iron-related cell death

Abstract

Taurine promoted the death of activated hepatic stellate cells (aHSCs) and reduced the deposition of the extracellular matrix (ECM).

  • Taurine treatment alleviated autophagy in aHSCs by decreasing autophagosome formation and downregulating specific protein expressions.
  • An increase in p62 protein expression was observed alongside the reduction of LC3B and Beclin 1 levels after taurine treatment.
  • Ferroptosis and ferritinophagy were triggered in aHSCs following taurine treatment, characterized by iron overload and lipid reactive oxygen species accumulation.
  • Bioinformatics analysis indicated that taurine directly targets nuclear receptor coactivator 4 with a strong average binding affinity.
