Similarities and differences in TDP-43 protein buildup in limbic brain changes alone versus with Alzheimer's disease

Abstract

Pure LATE-NC cases were on average 10 years older at death than ADNC + LATE-NC cases.

  • Pure LATE-NC cases exhibited less cognitive impairment compared to ADNC + LATE-NC cases.
  • Higher prevalence of argyrophilic grain disease and aging-related tau astrogliopathy was observed in pure LATE-NC cases.
  • The mesh-like neuritic TDP-43 pattern was present in 81% of pure LATE-NC cases but only in 18% of ADNC + LATE-NC cases.
  • LATE-NC cases showed increased burdens of various TDP-43 species, while a specific phosphorylated form was significantly associated with ADNC + LATE-NC in the amygdala.
  • Differences in nuclear clearance patterns were noted between pure LATE-NC and ADNC + LATE-NC.
