How drinking tea, coffee, or water all day relates to alertness and sleep quality

Abstract

Caffeinated beverages maintained critical flicker fusion (CFF) threshold over the whole day for participants consuming either tea or coffee.

  • Caffeine consumption was associated with sustained cognitive performance compared to water, particularly in CFF and subjective sedation after the first beverage.
  • Tea consumption at 75 mg caffeine increased CFF threshold significantly more than coffee within 30 to 90 minutes post-consumption.
  • After the second beverage, caffeinated coffee improved reaction time on the Recognition component of the choice reaction time task compared to tea at the same dose.
  • Caffeinated beverages negatively affected sleep onset, sleep time, and sleep quality in a dose-dependent manner.
