Changes in Telomere Length Linked to Radiation Sensitivity and Lung Inflammation in Lung Cancer Patients Undergoing Chest Radiotherapy

Abstract

Pre-RT telomere length decreased by 0.44% per year of age in patients receiving thoracic radiotherapy.

  • Telomere length decreased by 6.87% with each step increase in cancer stage.
  • Radical radiotherapy was linked to a 3.7% decrease in telomere length in peripheral blood mononuclear cells, observable for up to 6 months post-treatment.
  • Pre-treatment telomere length was a strong predictor of changes in telomere length following radiotherapy.
  • Dynamic changes in telomere length were more effective in predicting symptom burden and radiation pneumonitis than static measurements.
  • A positive correlation was found between telomere length and the ability to repair oxidative damage, with a specific repair capacity mediating 12.8% of telomere shortening caused by radiotherapy.
