Evidence

This cross-sectional NHANES analysis of 2,070 adults aged 60 years or older used qPCR telomere length and self-reported pain, finding lower odds of low back pain with longer telomeres (OR 0.77, 95% CI 0.63-0.95) and mediation analysis suggesting smoking explained about 60.9% of the telomere length-low back pain association.

Caveat

Because this was a cross-sectional study with self-reported pain, the smoking mediation and telomere-low back pain link cannot establish causality.
