Abstract

Tempol significantly reduced oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction in autoimmune uveitis models.

  • Uveitis patients and experimental autoimmune uveitis (EAU) rats showed increased levels of reactive oxygen species and mitochondrial damage compared to controls.
  • Activation of the cGAS-STING-NF-κB pathway was observed in uveitis models, correlating with heightened pro-inflammatory markers.
  • Tempol treatment improved mitochondrial function and reduced cytosolic mitochondrial DNA accumulation.
  • Suppression of cGAS or STING also mitigated pathway activation and restored antioxidant defenses.
  • The findings suggest a potential therapeutic target in the oxidative stress-mitochondrial DNA-cGAS-STING pathway for autoimmune uveitis.
