Adrenergic control of Lhx4 gene in the rat pineal gland and its link to melatonin-making enzymes

Abstract

Lhx4 expression in the pineal gland shows a fourfold circadian rhythm in rats starting from postnatal day 10.

  • Lhx4 is specifically expressed in the postnatal pineal gland of both rats and humans.
  • Adrenergic signaling positively drives the expression of Lhx4 in the pineal gland.
  • Lhx4 transcripts are exclusively localized in melatonin-synthesizing pinealocytes.
  • Knocking down Lhx4 by 95% in cultured pinealocytes leads to reduced levels of the melatonin-producing enzyme Aanat.
  • Lhx4 may significantly influence the phototransduction pathway and the development of nervous system components and photoreceptors.
