Dietary plant compounds and their possible role in managing digestive problems in autism

Updated

Abstract

Dietary polyphenols may help mitigate gastrointestinal symptoms in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

  • Emerging evidence suggests a link between the microbiota-gut-brain axis and gastrointestinal issues in ASD.
  • Specific phenolic compounds, such as resveratrol, quercetin, and curcumin, are proposed to have beneficial effects on GI symptoms.
  • Preclinical studies indicate that polyphenols may restore intestinal barrier integrity by enhancing tight junction proteins.
  • They may reduce mucosal inflammation by inhibiting specific inflammatory pathways.
  • Polyphenols could also influence gut motility through the modulation of neurotransmitters.
  • Direct clinical efficacy of polyphenols in ASD has not yet been established.
