Healing effects and side effects of Hongsheng Dan on long-lasting hard-to-heal wounds in rats

Updated

Abstract

Hongsheng Dan significantly improved wound healing in a rat model of chronic refractory skin ulcers, particularly at medium doses.

  • Wound healing was characterized by reduced inflammatory cell infiltration and increased collagen deposition, indicating improved tissue architecture.
  • Treatment led to higher expression levels of VEGF, a key factor in blood vessel formation and tissue regeneration.
  • Hongsheng Dan modulated several critical healing pathways, upregulating VEGF, TGF-β1, and Smad3, while downregulating Notch1 signaling.
  • No major organ histopathological abnormalities were observed with therapeutic doses, although significant mercury accumulation was noted in renal tissue.
  • These findings suggest potential nephrotoxic risks associated with extended use of Hongsheng Dan despite its therapeutic benefits.
