Thymoquinone's anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects reduce early aging changes caused by D-galactose in mice

Abstract

Thymoquinone (TQ) at 20 mg/kg significantly reduced markers of premature aging in a mouse model induced by D-galactose.

  • D-galactose treatment increased senescence markers, including elevated SA-β-gal activity and lipofuscin accumulation in liver and kidney tissues.
  • TQ treatment led to a decrease in inflammatory mediators such as IL-6, IL-8, E-selectin, and ICAM-1.
  • TQ also restored antioxidant balance by lowering levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and enhancing total antioxidant capacity (TAC).
  • Total nitric oxide metabolites (NOx) were restored with TQ treatment, indicating improved nitric oxide bioavailability.
  • The strongest anti-aging effects were observed with TQ at a dosage of 20 mg/kg.
