Tiny Ethosomal Hydrogels Carrying Thymoquinone: Preparation, Testing, and Antibacterial Effects Against Staphylococcus aureus

Updated

Abstract

Thymoquinone (TQ) achieved the highest solubility in soy lecithin at 65 mg/mL.

  • Nanosized ethosome formulations of TQ were developed to enhance its antimicrobial properties.
  • Formulation E6 showed optimal stability with a particle size of 114.8 nm and a zeta potential of -0.497 mV.
  • The E6 hydrogel retained 3.6 times more TQ compared to the conventional gel, improving skin penetration.
  • E6 demonstrated superior drug permeation and flux over 24 hours compared to TQ-CG hydrogel.
  • The TQ-loaded ethosome formulation exhibited significant antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus.
