TIME FOR COFFEE helps organize cell components and control gene activity for salt tolerance

Updated

Abstract

The clock component TIME FOR COFFEE (TIC) forms biomolecular condensates specifically in response to salt stress.

  • TIC mutants exhibit hypersensitivity to salt stress, indicating its role in salt tolerance.
  • Enhanced salt tolerance is observed in tic mutants under 21-hour light-dark cycles, aligning with their shortened circadian period.
  • Salt stress increases levels of a specific histone modification (H3K9ac) at salt stress-responsive genes in wild-type plants.
  • In tic mutants, both the increase in H3K9ac levels and the expression of salt-responsive genes are diminished.
  • TIC associates with certain histone deacetylases, and their interaction is influenced by salt stress, leading to changes in gene expression.
