  • Sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) is the leading cause of epilepsy-related death and typically occurs after nighttime seizures.
  • Time-of-day influences the likelihood of death following a seizure, though it does not affect the probability of having a seizure.
  • In normally entrained mice, vulnerability to seizure-induced death is greatest during the night.
  • In free-running mice, the phase of circadian rhythms also affects the risk of death following seizures occurring during subjective night.
  • The findings suggest that circadian rhythms may contribute to the higher incidence of SUDEP at night.
