Tirzepatide improves gut bacteria in obese, diabetic mice without ovaries

Abstract

Tirzepatide treatment in obese diabetic mice for four weeks improved intestinal barrier structure and altered gut microbiota composition.

  • Improvements in intestinal health were indicated by increased levels of Claudin 12 and decreased levels of Mucin 2.
  • Treatment with Tirzepatide reduced macrophage activation and inflammation.
  • The gut microbiota showed significant changes, with a decrease in Firmicutes and an increase in Bacteroidetes, altering their ratio.
  • Increases were observed in beneficial bacteria such as Bacteroides, Prevotella, and Akkermansia following treatment.
  • The findings suggest that Tirzepatide may help repair intestinal barrier integrity and mitigate endotoxemia.
