Tobacco Experimentation Linked to Anxiety and Depression in Tunisian Teenagers

Abstract

Tobacco experimentation was reported by 17.5% of pupils in a study of 1,353 adolescents in Tunisia.

  • 73.2% of pupils experienced depressive symptoms, while 65% reported anxiety symptoms.
  • Pupils indicating depressive disorders were significantly more likely to experiment with tobacco (20.2% vs. 9.9%).
  • The prevalence of tobacco experimentation was higher among those with anxiety disorders (21.0% vs. 14.5%).
  • Determinants of tobacco experimentation included being male, enrolled in high school, and having family members who smoke.
  • Experiencing depressive disorders was associated with a higher likelihood of tobacco experimentation.
