Effects of ginseng stem and leaf compounds on gut bacteria and short-chain fat metabolism in mice with sudden lung injury

Updated

Abstract

Total ginsenosides from Panax ginseng stems and leaves may reduce lung damage in LPS-induced acute lung injury in mice.

  • Treatment with total ginsenosides decreased lung index and lung wet/dry ratio in the model of acute lung injury.
  • A reduction in the number of inflammatory cells and levels of inflammatory factors in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid was observed.
  • The mRNA expression levels of inflammatory factors and the levels of myeloperoxidase and malondialdehyde in lung tissues were inhibited.
  • Activity of antioxidant enzymes glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase was enhanced in lung tissues.
  • Total ginsenosides appeared to reverse gut microbiota disorder, increasing the diversity and altering the relative abundance of specific bacterial families.
  • Levels of short-chain fatty acids, including acetic acid, propionic acid, and butyric acid, were increased in serum.
